I've said it before, and I'll say it again, "Lalene" by Jarrett, kills me every time I hear it. Those first few notes, and it transports me immediately to a much calmer place. It is one of his masterpieces.

Really hard question. And, I'm limited in that there's so much I haven't checked out. But, something like Ahmad Jamal, Teddy Wilson, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell. Probably in this ranking, too. Kind of standard people. Maybe folks forget about Teddy Wilson, I just have always thought he was so tasteful and perfect with Billie Holiday & Benny Goodman when I was listening to him as a kid over 30 years. So, I got to include him. Ahmad Jamal is the best, he transforms songs into something else. Monk is his own thing though. If we replace Monk with a more 'normal' player, then I guess Herbie Hancock or McCoy Tyner? Feels bad to leave out others.... What about you?

Those are all great choices and fantastic players. Its hard to do a top anything, but if I had to pick 5, Keith Jarrett will always be my #1 - for me its the solo improvisation concerts from 1975 - 1988 (Koln, Sun Bears Concerts, La Scala, Paris Concert) that keep him at the top. He changed the world of unaccompanied solo jazz piano and took the art of flow state improvisation to depths well never see again. After Jarrett, I have to go with Bill Evans and Thelonious - tied for 2, 3. I like what Miles said about Evans, "He's the best damn piano player I've ever seen." What was unique about Evans, is he was able to integrate the classical influence into his style without coming off as rigid or pretentious. And Monk, is well, Monk. The man. He knew how to groove, he knew how to swing, the pulse he brough to the keys with his marvelous cluster chords - another one, we will never see again. After those 3 its hard to pin down anything further, but I definitely have Oscar Peterson at 4 or 5.

Love seeing Keith Jarrett's Lalene on your top tracks. One of the greatest tracks of all time!

I added you because I saw a comment you left about how Fats Navarro should be more appreciated, and how he's a good person to hear after Bird and Diz.

I think that's true of all the people I like in any area of music - go your own way (definitely not a Fleetwood Mac reference!)

Rahsaan Roland is pretty much up there too - it's those that seem to strain at the leash a bit that I seem to love, those that take the music where they want it to go

thanks! I started out on piano aged about 7, my parents made me go for lessons, then I discovered the guitar at about 13, and moved onto bass when no-one else wanted to play it (they all wanted to be Hendrix or Clapton) and there happened to be one lying around. It was my road to Damascus moment, I discovered 'my' instrument! I've played mostly bass in bands ever since, with occasional forays on keys, guitar and even drums once, but the bass is really my first love. I got the sax almost by accident at around the same time as my long-time liking for and interest in jazz finally tipped over into a real love for the music, and now I find (mainly due to inability to properly get to grips with the harmonic and rhythmic possibilities of playing a front ;line horn) the bass is where I feel I'm going again, money and space permitting. I know exactly what you mean about Mingus, for me it's him and Monk who really speak to me although of course I love many, many artists..

Yeah, that's the one! I really like the Antibes album, the way the tunes get stretched and you don't really know where they will end up. A lot of Mingus' music seems to allow for this kind of exploration, and I love it. I play sax for the last few years, and electric bass before that, but i'm really starting to hanker after a double bass, and it's my birthday this week!
