Indie is a meaningless term & people who use it are so stupid they need lobotomies.

I just randomly checked the tags of some of the artists I listen to. Artists such as Nico, Nick Drake, Patty Waters, Hunx and his Punx, AlunaGeorge and Billie Holiday have all been tagged with this mysterious title of "indie". Each artist couldn't be more different sound wise. They don't fit the supposed "indie sound". Further more some of these artists aren't/weren't even on small independent labels to justify the original meaning of the word. Ironically a lot of the top artists tagged as indie are on major labels. I agree with raffraffraff that moods, themes and emotions are a lot clearer than genres. Genres are indeed pigeon holes.. Although Indie certainly doesn't have you pigeon holed. Everyone is indie apparently. There are even more "indie" artists on lastfm than female vocalists and singer songwriters.

Genres are pigeon holes that real artists break out of. If you want to make the world a better place, tag your tracks with words that apply to them... instruments, moods, emotions, themes. Genres are bullshit.

Indie is NOT just another way to call alternative! Real alternative music (not Muse, Radiohead or other similar trash from last.fm top) is much better than this mainstream crap.

What's all this whining about indie being a "shit tag"? People really need to understand that indie has developed way beyond the point where it was used to describe music released on an independent label. It really has nothing to do with that. It's a term used to describe music which offers something different. As a result of this, the "indie" tag covers a broad variety of music, but it still doesn't deserve to be called a "shit-tag". It really is helpful when trying to isolate alternative music from the stuff that dominates the charts. [2]

don't see all the fuss about this tag. it's one of the more accurate tags. for a (very) broad genre, I'd say it does a good job.

I have yet to visit the page of a top-40 pop artist that doesn't have "indie" as one of their top tags. Seriously, people are idiots.

Popular U.S. radio sitcom "Meet Corliss Archer" first came to television in 1951-1952, on CBS as a live comedy. This version is believed to be lost. The second version aired in first-run syndication from 1954 to 1955, and still exists...it is still occasionally repeated. BTW, did you know that peanuts are not actually nuts?
