True enough, Cage wasn't the first one to write a piece of music consisting solely of rests and in this sense didn't *create* it, it wasn't a genuinely new idea (although he doesn't seem to have been aware of the precursors at the time he came up with it, and so it was still his original idea, just a case of independent invention), but he *found* (Latin: invenire) it and milked it for what it's worth, which is surprisingly much.

It makes you change your perspective, to reflect on yourself. Despite the title under which it has become known, it is obviously not clear how long it actually lasts, or whether it is simply repeated ad infinitum (literally – at least as long as there is time, it will be there, or at the very least as long there are life forms to listen). It's also the ultimate easy-listening ambient music (at least as long the environment is not itself noisy). And the ultimate earworm. In effect, it virtually plays alongside every other piece of music without affecting it negatively (as xkcd has pointed out), so to say. It's the background music of life. And still, it can be noted down! It is both manmade and completely natural in a sense. Ultimately, it is also a lesson about the ability of the human mind to abstract and conceive even in such paradoxical ways. That's what it is: a paradox and a riddle.

Probably the most famous example of experimental music in its proper sense, given the unpredictable outcome, is John Cage's 4'33". Even though Cage was not the first one to come up with a completely silent piece of music, it seems he was the first one to recognise the inherent philosophical potential. Far from a silly joke or a mere curiosity, he realised that it raises lots of fundamental questions. It's amazing if you think about it. What you hear when the piece is performed is only the audience and the environment. It is ultimately democratic and non-elitist: Everyone can perform (in arbitrary constellations and arrangements), perceive, and analyse it (except perhaps the Deaf, but they too can understand it). No musical training needed. It is absolutely unobtrusive (unlike typical avant-garde music). It is essentially omnipresent. Like experimental music in general, it challenges the definition of music. Perhaps its main point is that it can teach you to rethink your preconceptions.

In the sense of "avant-garde music", "experimental music" is strictly speaking a misnomer anyway. Literally experimental music cannot be *composed* or even *improvised* in any usual manner, it must be *generated* through some kind of procedure whose results are unpredictable. Aleatoric music may be the oldest example. A simple type of music generator ("music" used in the widest sense) is something I once wrote, a program which converts the bytes a file consists of into a series of very short beeps, typically resulting in noise resembling a gurgling brook. While I have otherwise no practical experience with music generation, the output of more sophisticated music generation software probably does not sound avant-garde at all, but very simple, conventional and accessible, because more avant-garde (but non-random) music is much more difficult to compose automatically. A quite different approach to musical experimentation is represented by the Portsmouth Sinfonia and the Scratch Orchestra.

I make free psychedelic, multi-genre instrumental rock from Melbourne, Florida. It includes a variety of instruments playing in different styles. I recorded this in my room with the intent of it sounding like an old school record from the sixties. Hope you enjoy. http://christopher321.bandcamp.com/

@below idk what's all the fuss about, top artists of the tag are well specified. you're saying that animal collective seems like a rock band to you? man, they're trippin all the time so i suppose they cannot even think straight, not to mention sticking to some 'rock structures'. i agree, mars volta and sonic youth are more like rock bands, but the rest of the 'top' is really fuckin experimental

Looking at most of the artists in this tag (including the top ones), I kinda ask to myself what the fuck is so ambiguous about the term "experimental". Man, if your song structures, your instruments, your textures, your lyrics and your sound are like every rock band ones, what the hell is so experimental about that?
