Of course the Beatles were experimental in certain tracks. No one in rock music was creating anything like "Tomorrow Never Knows" in 1966. Of course Frank Zappa was another one who was experimental for his time period but the Beatles were able to put it to insanely great melodies like "Strawberry Fields Forever".

There is no point of arguing what is and isn't experimental because it's so broad and subjective.

it depends if you consider "fusions" to be experimental. the Beatles incorporated experimental tape techniques, microtonal/Eastern melodies and a time change or two into pop song structure and rock instrumentation: experimental rock, even if only for a few albums. Sonic Youth applies modernist instrument preparations and extended techniques to the established no wave/punk rock sound: experimental rock. Radiohead (at least on Kid A/Amnesiac and "Climbing Up the Walls") applies 20th century compositional concepts (extended techniques, microtonal harmony, modal changes) to pop song structure and rock experimentation, deliberately not sounding like rock music but still stemming from that post-rock, "this is not rock" tendency. so...how do you quantify if all of the above is experimental or not? all of the above apply already established 20th century techniques to already established rock structures. with all that in mind, is Frank Zappa experimental, or just relatively within a rock idiom?

I think there should be a seperate tag for 'Actually Experimental' and 'Mainstream music I would like to pass off as experimental so I can feel special by listening to music nobody else does'. All you people who claim that Radiohead are experimental- listen to Revolution 9 by The Beatles. If you could name me a more experimental Radiohead song, I would like to hear it. And even so, bear in mind that The Beatles did that in the 60's.

wow get your head out of your little arses and trying looking lower to the ground than radiohead. Listen to Hudson Mohawke or something that truly is experimental

Radiohead have used some experimental elements in their career, but that doesn't make them experimental artists
